What is viral marketing? Well first we must define the term "viral". In internet terms "Viral" means becoming extremely popular in a very short amount of time. The word viral comes from the root word "virus", the most dreaded word in computer land. A virus can disable the most sophisticated computer. A virus is a malicious computer program that disrupts the proper function of a computers operating system and files. It is not surprising therefore that one of the biggest software industries is virus protection. It is reccomended that every computer should have effective and updated virus protection before even connecting to the internet.

How are viruses associated with marketing? Viral marketing does not involve the use of an actual computer virus. It is a marketing tactic which mimics the action of a virus. A virus starts in one computer and spreads exponentially to other computers in a network or through the internet. Viral marketing utilizes the infectuous analogy of a virus. However, instead of spreading malicious or harmful data it aims to inform a large amount of people.

Most viral traffic systems utilize a simple concept that is structured as follows; a duplicating web page is created with 5 or 6 separate ads. When a new user signs up they will receive a website just like the original one. The difference is the new user's website will have his own ad that replaces the ad in the #1 position! The ad that was in the #1 position will move down to the #2 position, the 2nd ad to the #3 position, and so on with the last ad being taken off of your web page.

When someone signs up from your website, their Ad will be placed in the #1 spot with your Ad moving to the #2 spot, the 2nd Ad moving down to the #3 spot and so on. By the time your Ad reaches the #6 spot and exits the system your Ad plenty of Free Traffic Hits.
